Mayflower 400

Proposed by Danny Reilly

1. This branch of the Labour Party notes the commencement of the Mayflower 400 commemorations in Plymouth, in particular the publication of ‘The Mayflower 400 Scheme of Work’, intended to promote and guide the telling of the ‘Mayflower Story’ in all Plymouth schools.

2. This meeting asks the secretary to write to the relevant Plymouth Council person dealing with these matters, Katherine Walker, and to the leaders of Mayflower 400, to call upon them to withdraw this scheme. The grounds for withdrawing the scheme as drafted, are that it sanitises and distorts the ‘Mayflower Story’, particularly as it relates to Indigenous and African Americans. This branch believes that if the promotion of such a sanitised account of the Mayflower Story is allowed to be used in local schools, not only will it continue the ignominious tradition of distortion and neglect of Indigenous and African American accounts of their histories, but also risks bringing Plymouth and historical education into disrepute.

3. This branch of PS&D Labour Party also instructs that this resolution is forwarded to the CLP with firstly, the added proposal that they too pass parts 1 and 2, and secondly, with the advice that it be also forwarded to other branches of our CLP and to the two neighbouring Plymouth CLPs for their consideration.
