After my Grandad gave me a copy of the Ragged Trousered philanthropist on my sixteenth birthday, I was determined to get involved in the Labour movement and join the Labour party. Growing up I had seen my parents juggle work and education to gain the qualifications they needed to progress in their careers and provide opportunities for my brother and I. Their hard work taught me the value and importance of education and gave me the opportunity to go to university.
After living in Cardiff for five years, I returned home to Plymouth in 2007. I began working in the NHS and joined UNISON. I became an active trade unionist at Derriford Hospital where I worked. I was elected Branch Chair in 2009 and led campaigns against NHS cuts and privatisation and represented members in the workplace. I also became an active campaigner for our Party, standing as a candidate on several occasions in strong Tory seats before getting elected Plymstock Dunstone in Budshead ward in 2012. Since being elected to the Council, I have had the privilege of representing communities in Budshead and working with the Labour Group to build a stronger, fairer Plymouth. I have served on council committees and currently have a position in the Cabinet with responsibility for Transformation and Customer Services.
I am a proud Plymothian. Plymouth is my home and Plymouth is the place I have chosen to start a family. I would therefore love another opportunity to stand as your Labour candidate as I am totally committed to ensuring Labour and Co-operative values remain at the heart of the city in which my son will grow up.
