Changes to our local NHS under the Tories threatens to close three GP Practices in Plymouth in a cost cutting exercise, including Cumberland Surgery in Devonport, Hyde Park Surgery in Peverell, and St Barnabas’ in Stoke.
NHS England has stated that they may find it impossible to renew contracts with these surgeries after March 2017.
Patients have told us that they are confused about the threatened closure, as they have built trusting long term relationships with their current doctors, and fear they may not find another doctor in the local area.
Dr Jonathan Gale, who was a GP at the surgery for 30 years, is reported as saying that the practice had the “highest satisfaction ratings” and that the closures are “about money”.
At a recent public meeting about the closure, Labour Councillors spoke out about patients’ concerns that widespread support for the surgeries is being ignored in the ongoing engagement.
Councillor Mike Sparling, who is himself a patient at the surgery, said the engagement meetings had “left people even more confused”, while Councillor Sam Davey said that his reading of it was that “This is what we are going to do, and you can put in your views, but at the end of the day we're going to close your surgery”.
Your Labour councillors have met with NHS England to try and negotiate a meaningful engagement with the aim of keeping the surgery open.

The old gasometer site on St Levan Road has been the source of many rumours for some time. What is being built on it? Who knows? We picked up local residents' concerns about the site when we were canvassing in the area recently, so we've been back today letting people know that there are currently no plans by the site's owner to develop the site. The City Council has not had any pre-application notices or any planning applications in.
Cllr Philippa Davey explains here what she and Sam and Mike, the two other Labour councillors, are doing to keep residents informed.
If you've got a concern about the old gasometer site please get in touch by emailing Philippa - firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01752 269180.
